YMCA Hollywood

YMCA Hollywood

In 1927 the YMCA, young men’s Christian association established themselves in Hollywood with the Hollywood YMCA. The Hollywood YMCA building was designed to bring its membership together for the purpose of improving both mind and body through physical fitness. Paul Williams, noted architect in the Los Angeles area was the architect of original YMCA Hollywood building.

The current YMCA Hollywood building is made up of three segments. The original building constructed in 1921, second building addition 1928 and the third building addition 1968. The original building and second building addition have been designated as a Historical Cultural Monument.

The YMCA Hollywood is presently undergoing remodeling within the third building addition.

Phase-1 is the remodel of the entry lobby, waiting area, and fitness studio. Construction of Phase-1 is nearly complete. Remodeling includes a new reception desk, new waiting and social area, and new workout fitness area with fitness machines.

Phase-2 is the remodeling of the men’s, woman’s and family locker rooms and access from adjacent parking structure. Phase-2 construction is to commence in April 2022. Remodeling includes new shower, toilet rooms, steam rooms, sauna rooms, and individual changing rooms in the Family locker rooms.

Phase-3 is the remodeling of the exterior entry court. Currently a fund raising campaign is underway for the funding of Phase-3. The remodeling includes of new covered building entry, a new synthetic exterior court surface fitness area, a new walkway from Schrader Avenue.

The look will be reminiscent of old world Europe and their sports courts. Our goal is a modern/historic integration of space, time, and function that accents, softens, and humanizes the spaces. The goal is to invoke a feeling of openness to the community and show off the flexibility and multiple uses of the YMCA’s facilities. Coming out of the new entry from the new parking structure will feel as if you are exiting a subway station with all the hurrah of the sports court entry paths within the gardens.
