Animal Lovers & Global Warming

I was reading the “From Our Members” section of the EDF Environmental Defense Fund magazine, Solutions Fall 2014 edition. In it there was a letter from a reader talking about the Wildebeest migration to the southern Serengeti and how it used to be said that you could set your watch to when the rainy season was going to start. And it made me think about the relationship between humans, their pets, and Global Warming.

Do you love your pets? What would you do for them if they were in peril? Do you buy them higher quality food? How often do you go the veterinarian? How about keeping the house warmer or building them a special place in your home? If you have a pet your must love animals! I hope you treat yours well.

Our pets are free! They live in the trees and on the ground all around my home. They make homes in the crevices in the landscape. They eat what nature has provided. They do not go hungry. Ok, maybe the squirrels and coyotes aren’t our “pets” per say, but they definitely live off of and on our property.

So to the point! If you love animals you should understand that most animals are being threatened by global warming, habitat removal, and destruction. Global warming is changing the climate, vegetation, water access, predatory hierarchy, and a host of other issues. With the warmer climate White Bark Pine trees are weakened and the Bark Beetle takes over. The trees die. Over time the earth will erode. The animals that live in colder climates will start to migrate to “new” colder climates if they can because their existing climates are warming up, which will change migratory animal life as we know it.

All living creatures have developed in their micro-environments. They change over a long period of time to meet environmental changes. Humans have upped the speed of change and will restrict future opportunities for many creatures to adapt. The strong survive or at least the most adaptable do.

I say if you love your pets you should also care about the other living entities, at least give them a chance. Some of these are indicator species that let us know when we might be in for a tough fight for our survival. Please protect fee roaming living creatures and their habitats
